Ask your MP to press the Government to update waste planning policies without delay, strengthen regulation of the incineration industry, and begin work on new measures to halve residual waste.

Reading about incinerator pollution can leave you feeling powerless. The air we breathe is shared, and no individual can clean it alone. But policy is made by the people we elect, and MPs respond to what their constituents tell them. That is why a short, personal email is one of the most effective things you can do.

Three requests deserve a place in your message.

First, ask your MP to press the Government to update waste planning policies without delay. Planning guidance still lags behind the evidence on health and climate. Until it is revised, new incinerators can keep winning approval under rules that were never designed to account for what we now know. Local communities often discover plans only when it is too late to influence them.

Second, ask for stronger regulation of the incineration industry. Operators currently report their own emissions, inspections are often announced in advance, and the thresholds used to judge safety are out of date. Independent monitoring, unannounced inspections, and standards that reflect current science would restore public confidence and protect people living nearby.

Third, ask the Government to begin work on new measures to halve residual waste. The most reliable way to cut incinerator pollution is to produce less waste to burn. Stronger action on reuse, repair, recycling, and reducing packaging would lower emissions, save resources, and ease pressure to build more capacity.

Keep it brief and polite, say who you are and that you live in the constituency, and name your requests clearly. A personal sentence about why this matters to you –  whether for your family, your neighbourhood, or your health – carries more weight than a template. Ask for a reply, and follow up if you don't receive one.
