Plastic Is Not Just Around Us - It Is Inside Us
Plastic pollution is usually pictured as something outside the body: bottles on beaches, fragments floating in oceans or waste accumulating in landfill. Increasingly, however, scientists are finding evidence of plastic somewhere much closer to home - inside us.

As plastic breaks down, it forms microscopic particles known as microplastics and even smaller nanoplastics. Humans can encounter these particles through food, drinking water and the air we breathe. Researchers have now reported microplastics in human blood, lungs, placentas, stool, reproductive tissues and other organs.
Finding plastic in the body does not automatically mean it is causing disease. But it raises an important question: what happens when material designed for durability meets living tissue?
Laboratory and emerging human research provides several reasons for concern. Micro- and nanoplastics may contribute to oxidative stress and inflammation - processes capable of damaging cells when they become excessive. Plastic is also more than a polymer. Additives including phthalates and bisphenols can interfere with hormonal signalling, creating particular concerns around reproductive and developmental health.

Perhaps one of the most striking human findings came from research examining carotid artery plaques. Patients whose plaques contained micro- or nanoplastics have a higher risk of heart attack, stroke or death during follow-up than those without detected plastics. Crucially, this was an association and does not prove the particles caused these events.
There is still much scientists do not know about dose, long-term exposure and which particles present the greatest danger. Yet one fact is becoming difficult to ignore: plastic pollution is no longer simply an environmental issue. The boundary between environmental health and human health is disappearing.
