A Day in the Life of a Microplastic Particle

From a plastic bottle to microplastic particles, told as if it happened in a single day
6:00 AM
It began the workday at 6 AM: filled, capped, handed to someone in a hurry. It held water for twenty minutes, then was put down and, missing the recycling bin by a few steps, dropped into a drain instead.
It is made of PET, which is a recyclable plastic engineered to resist breaking down. It is built for permanence, but used within minutes.
9:00 AM

Rain carried it to a stream, the stream to a river, the river to the sea – a journey our story fits into three hours, but which in reality takes months or years.
At sea, it joined the North Pacific Gyre, a slow-rotating current that herds floating debris toward a calm centre. This is how the Great Pacific Garbage Patch forms – not an island of rubbish, but a calm soup of mostly invisible debris, spread over an area roughly three times the size of France.
12:00 PM
Sunlight and waves go to work. UV light breaks down the chemical bonds that make plastic so durable while waves grind the rest. But the bottle never truly biodegrades; it just fragments into smaller pieces, until it qualifies as a microplastic, which is any piece of plastic less than 5 millimetres.
By now, it looks a lot like food.
3:00 PM
A small fish finds it. Fish that feed by sight struggle to tell a fleck of plastic from a fleck of plankton, especially at similar size and colour, swallowing both together. The fragment lodges in its gut, not digested, not excreted, just taking up space.
6:00 PM
A larger fish eats the smaller one, plastic included. It is caught by a trawler. Microplastics move up the food chain this way — not sought out, just carried by whatever ate the microplastics first found in animals at nearly every level of marine life, from plankton to whales.
The fish is sold. You buy it for dinner.
8:00 PM

Microplastics start travelling more directly, through tap and bottled water, sea salt, and shellfish eaten whole — no food chain required.
Some particles are small enough to cross the gut lining into the bloodstream. They were first found in human blood in 2022, and since then they have also been found in lung tissue and breast milk. In studies from 2020 to 2024, every human placenta tested , microplastics were found in both the maternal and fetal sides.
12:00 AM
Over 400 million tonnes of plastic are made every year, most never recycled, and none removable once broken apart in the ocean. A PET bottle can take around 450 years to break down this way, continuously releasing chemicals.
The moment in this whole journey that could have changed everything was at 6 AM, by simply buying a glass or a steel water bottle.
